How to Create Meaningful Snail Mail

Snail Mail Revival is an Instagram project where we make compatible pen pal matches and we feature the photos of the creative and unique packages that are sent.

We have received questions asking, “What should I send to my pen friend?” Here you will find a few tips to make your letters and packages extra special!

  1. Processed with VSCOcam with s1 presetGet to know your pen friend:  This can take a few mail exchanges, but once you get an idea of their interests, it makes it a little easier to find things to write about and what to include in your package.  The most important thing to remember when assembling your package is the letter.  The letter is what makes this meaningful.  This is where you talk about your life, interests and ask questions, learning more about your friend.  You do not have to give away your deepest, darkest secrets, just making conversation in a light manner will do.  While you are in the process of getting to know your pen friend, you can include a few small items that might express your own interests or an item you enjoy.  There is no need to go overboard, as simple packages are lovely enough.
  2. Add embellishments: This is also a great way to make you package more special.  Using calligraphy or pretty handwriting can make your letter unique.  If handwriting is not your thing, the use of different fonts is also an option.  There are an endless number of amazing fonts that are easy to download.  Unique stationery and decorative envelopes is another way of making you parcel special and this is perfect when sending letters only.
  3. Add small gifts: When it comes to including items in your package, the possibilities are endless.  Below, is a list of ideas of items we have sent and received.  When sending packages internationally, keep in mind the items that you can and cannot send in the mail {visit usps.com or your local postal service for more information here}.  You also may need to fill out a customs form.  Packages that are thicker or in padded envelopes usually will need this form.  Here are a few simple items that you can include:
